You have probably experienced both sparkling wines and Champagne and not really been able to detect a difference. All wines with bubbles are not Champagne. Only sparkling wine made in the French region of Champagne (about 80 miles north-east of Paris) is allowed to be called Champagne. This is largely made with grape varieties Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier of the region. Champagne makers follow Méthode Champenoise or Traditional Method to produce Champagne. Cremant

Cremant de Burgundy, Loire, Alsace are all used for sparkling wines made in any region in France other than Champagne. Traditional Method is used to make these Sparkling wines. Every region makes it out of the grapes grown in the region and there are laws regarding the same. For example,. Loire uses Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Franc while Alsace uses Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer.

Cava

Sparkling wines from Spain are referred to as Cava. They are also made through Methode Champenoise. The grape varieties used to make Cava are Xarello, Macabeo, Parellada and many others. Cordoniu is a famous producer of Cava.

Prosecco

A bubbly made from the Glera grape in Italy through Charmat method, where unlike the traditional method second fermentation takes place in large closed pressure tanks. It is not aged on lees which makes it less complex.

Moscato D’Asti

It is a sweet sparkling wine from the Piedmont region of Italy. It is made from Moscato grapes grown in the Asti region. It ranges from less to very sweet.

Lambrusco

It is a sparkling red wine, an off-dry style that comes from Emilia Romagna, Italy. It used to be well-known only in Italy but this unique wine is now crossing borders and getting the fame it deserves.

Franciacorta

It is a sparkling wine made in the Lombardy region in Italy. It is made through Traditional method using Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc. It is a fruity and fuller tasting sparkling wine.

Sekt

Sparkling wine made in Germany is famously called Sekt. Riesling Sekt are famous across globes. Some winemakers from Germany are rolling out excellent quality Sekt.

Every wine producing country wants to try their hands at making sparkling wines using the renowned methods and many regions are successful to a great extent at producing good quality sparkling wines. Some countries which have succeeded in making some great sparkling wines are England, California, Australia, South Africa andSouth America.
